Global Indoor Football League
The Global Indoor Football League was a proposed indoor gridiron football league based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. It was founded by Mississauga resident David Parsons and is set to begin play in 2015. Four teams will make up the new league and all will be based in suburban markets in Southern Ontario. The GIFL will have a different indoor football field than the conventional American indoor field as it will be a 55-yard long field, half the size of a Canadian football field (a la the Canadian Football League). It will also be a 7-on-7 game as opposed to the 8-on-8 format preferred by most American indoor football leagues. 〔(Indoor football league launches with weekend combine ), Zoe McKnight, ''Toronto Star'', January 27, 2014〕
If the league launches, the GIFL will be the first paying indoor football league to be primarily based in Canada. The Toronto Phantoms of the Arena Football League had previously played in Toronto in 2001 and 2002. A previous effort at a Canadian indoor football league, the North American Indoor Football League, folded before playing its first season in 2005. The amateur (and all-female) Legends Football League has had Canadian operations since 2011; Mississauga hosted the Toronto Triumph in 2012.
Guelph and Windsor have previously hosted outdoor professional football (Windsor with occasional CFL exhibition games, Guelph with its hosting of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats during its 2013 season).
As of July 2014, the league's Web site has gone offline and the status of the league is unknown.
